Hematite is a well-known crystal made up of iron-oxide that has a trigonal crystal system. It has a metallic-like luster and its colors range from black to grayish silver. Hematite are rated at a 5-6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness, they are found in England, Brazil, Mexico, Canada and the U.S. Hematite is found in many igneous and metamorphic rocks in sedimentary marine environments. It is often found on the bottom of lakes in northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
Hematite can be found throughout the world, the most notable locations being Brazil, Africa, Australia, Russia and the Midwest. Hematite is also found on another planet; in 1998 an infrared spectrometer on NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft detected a large deposit of Hematite near the Martian equator, in a region called Sinus Meridiani. The name Hematite is derived from the Greek word haima or haimatites, meaning blood red or blood-like. The ancient Greeks were fascinated by this stone and believed it held strong protective and healing powers. Ancient cultures have utilized Hematite by grinding it down into a pigment. Prehistoric peoples used Hematite pigment to etch on the walls of caves and it was also used by Native Americans as a type of war paint.
Energetically, Hematite is a strong grounding, balancing and protective stone. It is said to help absorb and transmute negative energies, and can assist in balancing energy meridians in the body.
