This is what makes the material unusual. It is a true fossil, preserving the shape and internal pattern of a once-living organism, and at the same time a true agate. On the Mohs hardness scale it sits at roughly 6.5 to 7 — about the same as quartz — so it is hard, durable, and able to take the fine, glassy polish you see on finished pieces. The coral supplied the pattern; the silica supplied the toughness and shine.

How Coral Turns to Agate
The process is a form of permineralization, sometimes called replacement. After a coral colony was buried, groundwater rich in dissolved silica slowly seeped through the sediment and into the porous skeleton. Bit by bit, over what is generally understood to be millions of years, that silica precipitated in place, replacing the original calcium-carbonate mineral almost molecule by molecule.
The remarkable part is how faithful the copy is. Because the replacement happened so gradually, it preserved the fine architecture of the coral — the individual cups, or corallites, where each tiny animal once lived, and the radiating walls between them. When the silica finished its work, those structures remained intact, only now rendered in hard, translucent agate instead of soft, chalky carbonate. A fragile skeleton became a stone that can be cut and polished without losing a single detail of the original.
What Makes It Distinctive: The Flower Patterns
The signature of agatized coral is its pattern. When a piece is cut and polished, the preserved corallites appear as small rounded rosettes scattered across the surface — clusters of fine lines radiating out from a center, so that each one looks like a little flower or a starburst. Collectors often describe the effect as chrysanthemum-like or floral, and it is the feature that instantly sets this material apart from ordinary banded agate.
No two pieces are ever the same. The size, spacing, and color of the "flowers" depend on the species of coral and the conditions under which it fossilized, so every slab and cabochon carries a one-of-a-kind arrangement. Colors tend toward soft, natural earth tones — creamy whites and grays, warm tans and browns, sometimes touched with pink, honey, or peach — with the flower shapes standing out against a smooth, contrasting background.
Two of the best-known sources deserve a mention. In the United States, agatized coral is closely tied to Florida, where it is honored as the official state stone. It is also found abroad, with Indonesia being another well-known source of finely patterned material.

Some people are drawn to bold, well-defined flowers with strong contrast; others prefer softer, more scattered patterning or a particular palette of earth tones. Because each specimen is unique, the best approach is simply to look for the arrangement and colors you keep coming back to.
Caring for it is easy, thanks to that agate hardness. Warm water, a mild soap, and a soft cloth are all it takes to keep a polished piece looking its best; harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners are best avoided, and storing harder stones separately keeps nothing from scratching over time. Treated with ordinary care, agatized coral holds its polish for a lifetime.
